Frequently Asked Questions

Who are you guys?

Spectacle was founded by Kevin Hale and Danny Dumas. Kevin is the CEO and creative director. He used to be a managing partner at Y Combinator. Danny is the editor-in-chief. He’s written for Wired, Esquire, GQ, Popular Science, and The Wall Street Journal. We like thinking about new worlds, the future, and investing in promising creative talent.

How did this happen?

Danny: What would you do with universal basic income, Kevin?
Kevin: Start a magazine.
Danny: Really.
Kevin: Yeah.
Danny: Sounds like a terrible idea.

Why a print magazine?

Reading online is fun but fleeting. We wanted to create a publication about subjects we love that has a degree of permanence. Also something that also looks nice on a coffee table.

When will it launch?

The first issue ships February 2018. You can subscribe now, though.

How much will it cost?

Twenty bucks an issue. USA bucks.

What will it look like?

Kinfolk for nerds? Illustrations instead of photos.

Did you say illustrations?

Yes! We’re 100 percent illustrated. No photos. Even the ads.

Will there be an online component?

Yes. A few articles from each issue will show up on the website and be accessible for free. You’ll start seeing them over the next few weeks.

Will you sell digital versions of the magazine?

Yes, but only after all the print issues are sold.

Will there be any non-fiction?

Yes! And it will have a connection to the fiction pieces. You know how you watch a movie and then go home and dive into IMDB and Wikipedia for a few hours after? The magazine will sort of let you do that.

Can I have a job?

There’s plenty of work to do, but we’re not hiring or taking any interships at this time.

I’m a professional writer and I’d like to contribute. Are you taking submissions?

Yes! See our submission section.

I’m an amateur writer and I’d like to contribute. Are you taking submissions?

Yes! See our submission section.

Will there be punch and pie?

Of course.

Should I summon an army of the undead using dark magic and forbidden texts?

Please don’t do that.
